A troubling investigation involving a former NFL player has reportedly taken a significant turn.

Authorities have identified Darius Bernard, a former linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, as a person of interest in an ongoing homicide investigation connected to a woman who disappeared nearly five years ago.

The development comes months after human remains were discovered on property previously owned by Bernard.

According to reports, the remains of 22 year old Marisol Elena Cruz were found in January 2026 during excavation work on land that Bernard owned until 2025.

Cruz was originally reported missing in September 2021, and her family searched for answers for more than four years.

The case remained unresolved until construction workers uncovered human remains while conducting routine excavation work on the property.

Authorities are now officially treating the case as a homicide investigation.

At this time, however, the cause of death has not been publicly released.

Investigative records indicate that shortly after Cruz disappeared, several individuals told police that Bernard may have had connections to her.

Despite those reports, there is no indication that Bernard was formally interviewed during the early stages of the investigation.

Law enforcement officers reportedly visited the area near Bernard’s property with members of the victim’s family only days after she was reported missing.

According to family members, a strong odor of decomposition was present near the location at that time.

However, officers initially believed the smell likely came from a dead animal and did not expand the search deeper into the area.

Questions surrounding the case intensified following statements from the victim’s grandmother.

According to her account, Cruz told family members she was spending time with an athlete shortly before her disappearance.

During a phone call on September 5, 2021, she reportedly said she was still with Bernard.

Shortly after that call, her family lost all contact with her.

Bernard has strongly denied any connection to the case.

Speaking to reporters, the former Cowboys linebacker stated, “I don’t know this woman.”

Bernard also suggested that another individual may have had a relationship with Cruz before she disappeared.

According to prior police records, that individual told investigators in 2021 that he and Bernard had a falling out months earlier over a dispute involving a woman.

At this time, Bernard has not been charged with any crime.

Authorities have not formally accused him of homicide.

However, he remains a person of interest as the investigation continues.

The discovery of Cruz’s remains has renewed attention on a case that remained unresolved for years.

For the victim’s family, the latest development has brought both pain and a renewed demand for answers.

As investigators continue gathering evidence and reviewing witness statements, many key questions remain unanswered.

For now, authorities continue pursuing the case to determine exactly what happened to Marisol Elena Cruz.

The investigation remains active, and officials are expected to review both old leads and new evidence connected to the property.

Until more information is released, Bernard’s status remains limited to person of interest.

But the discovery has placed renewed scrutiny on a former Dallas Cowboys player whose past connection to the case is now under investigation.

Just 12 Hours After Chicago Bears Failed to Re-Sign 6× Pro Bowl Veteran Wide Receiver, This Superstar Set His Sights on Joining Dallas Cowboys to Pursue His First Super Bowl, per Adam Schefter
Dallas, Texas — Just twelve hours after contract negotiations between the Chicago Bears and six-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen officially collapsed, the veteran star is already being heavily linked to the Dallas Cowboys. According to Adam Schefter, Allen has quickly emerged as one of the top names connected to Dallas following the Bears’ failure to finalize a new agreement. League insiders reportedly believe Allen is now prioritizing one final championship opportunity before the future Hall of Fame receiver walks away from football permanently. The Cowboys unexpectedly entered the conversation after aggressively searching for another proven veteran weapon to strengthen Mike McCarthy’s passing attack entering the 2026 season. Dallas created a significant void at wide receiver earlier this offseason after failing to reach a long-term extension with a key contributor and dealing with depth concerns. While the Cowboys boast superstar CeeDee Lamb and promising young talent, many analysts believe they still lack a reliable, experienced possession receiver to win in the middle of the field and stabilize critical late-game situations. That is exactly why Keenan Allen has suddenly become viewed as an almost perfect fit for McCarthy’s offensive system heading into training camp. Even at 34 years old, Allen continues producing at a remarkably efficient level despite playing through injuries and quarterback instability in recent seasons. Last year with Chicago, Allen still recorded 81 receptions for 777 receiving yards and four touchdowns despite inconsistent offensive production around him. Several league executives reportedly believe Allen’s elite route running, football intelligence, and veteran leadership would immediately elevate Dallas’ passing game and provide Dak Prescott with a trusted security blanket in high-pressure moments. The situation became even more interesting after reports surfaced claiming Allen was “extremely intrigued” by Dallas’ offensive scheme, massive market, and championship aspirations. According to multiple insiders, Allen views the Cowboys as one of the most talented NFC teams capable of making a serious Super Bowl run immediately — giving him the best remaining chance to finally win the ring that has eluded him. Many around the league also believe Allen respects Mike McCarthy’s offensive creativity and the opportunity to operate as a reliable veteran WR2/WR3 option alongside CeeDee Lamb in America’s Team. One NFC executive reportedly described the possible fit between Allen and Dallas as “one of the cleanest football pairings currently available anywhere in free agency.” The Bears’ inability to retain Allen has already created frustration throughout Chicago after fans expected the veteran receiver to finish his career there. Instead, the possibility of Allen joining Dallas has now created major excitement across Cowboys Nation as speculation continues growing rapidly online. “At this stage of his career, Keenan wants one thing above everything else. He wants a legitimate chance to finally compete for a Super Bowl ring before it’s over.” As of Tuesday night, neither Allen nor the Cowboys organization had officially confirmed whether active contract discussions are already taking place behind closed doors.
