Jeff Hafley Cuts Two Rising UDFA Players for Missing Every Offseason Program Session: “They Chose to Travel While the Entire Team Was Training”

Posted Jun 20, 2026

Miami, Florida — The Miami Dolphins have made a decisive and pointed move that is already sending a strong message throughout the locker room.

Head coach Jeff Hafley confirmed the team has released two undrafted players once viewed as promising depth options within the roster.

The official reason: neither player participated in a single offseason workout since Phase 1 began.

While teammates — from core veterans to emerging contributors — consistently showed up, both players reportedly chose to spend that time traveling.

At today’s press conference, Hafley delivered a firm and direct message.

“Although these workouts are voluntary, every player who wants to compete has been here putting in the work. While the rest of the team is building chemistry and preparing for the season, they chose to travel and haven’t shown up at all. That matters.”

The players referenced are Major Burns and Jaylen Key, both of whom were signed after the draft with expectations to compete for depth roles.

Hafley emphasized that while offseason participation is not mandatory by league rules, it remains a critical evaluation period.

For coaching staff, it is not just about performance, but about mindset, discipline, and commitment to the team culture.

Both players were entering crucial developmental stages, where consistency and presence often determine long-term opportunity.

Their complete absence from the program raised immediate concerns internally.

Sources within the organization suggest that questions about commitment had already surfaced before offseason activities began.

Missing every session ultimately confirmed those concerns.

The move sends a clear message from the Dolphins coaching staff.

No role is guaranteed.

No opportunity is protected.

And potential alone will not secure a roster spot.

Whether a player is a rookie, UDFA, or developing contributor, accountability remains non-negotiable.

Miami is currently progressing through Phase 2 of its offseason program, with OTAs and mandatory minicamp approaching.

Following this decision, depth across multiple positions is expected to be reassessed through internal competition and potential new signings.

Inside the building, the message is clear.

Show up.

Put in the work.

Or risk losing your place before the season even begins.

Update: Representatives for both players have not yet issued official comments regarding the situation.

Beloved Former Dolphins Player Retires from NFL and Joins Miami Police Department
For years, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine was one of the most respected and quietly reliable contributors for the Miami Dolphins. He was known for his discipline, versatility, toughness, and willingness to do the unnoticed work that helped the team succeed. Though not always in the spotlight, his consistency and professionalism earned the trust of coaches and teammates throughout his career. Over time, he became a valued presence inside the locker room, bringing stability and effort during both challenging and competitive stretches. Throughout his career, Westbrook-Ikhine built a reputation through dedication rather than headlines. He contributed across multiple offensive roles, delivered in key moments, and remained dependable whenever called upon. Even as the game evolved and rosters changed, his approach never wavered. Teammates consistently praised his preparation, work ethic, and commitment to the team above individual recognition. In December 2025, Westbrook-Ikhine quietly announced his retirement from the NFL. After stepping away from football, he took time to reflect on the next chapter of his life. But leaving the game did not mean stepping away from the community that supported him. This week, he officially began a new journey, joining the Miami Police Department as a new recruit. In a heartfelt statement, he explained the motivation behind his decision. “Football gave me opportunities, but this community gave me purpose. Miami supported me through every stage of my career, and now it is my responsibility to give back and serve the people who stood behind me.” Those close to him say the transition feels natural. His discipline, awareness, and calm approach under pressure are qualities that translate well into law enforcement. He is expected to be involved in community outreach programs, youth mentorship, and public safety initiatives across the city. For Dolphins fans, he will always be remembered as more than just a player. He was dependable. Committed. And a professional who represented the values of the organization. Many supporters have already expressed admiration for his decision to continue serving in a new way. From contributing on the field to now protecting the community, his journey reflects a lasting sense of responsibility. Nick Westbrook-Ikhine may have stepped away from the NFL, but his purpose continues. And in every way that matters, he remains connected to the city he once represented on Sundays.
