His family shared an emotional statement on social media, saying that Josh took his final breath on Earth and his first in Heaven.

Although Mauro’s time with the Steelers was brief, he became a beloved figure among Pittsburgh fans who fondly remember his contributions during his short yet impactful time with the team.

After leaving the Steelers, Mauro joined the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the majority of his career across six seasons, showcasing his strength and skill as a defensive end.

Mauro also played for the New York Giants in 2018 and the Oakland Raiders in 2019 before returning to the Cardinals for the final years of his career.

Just before signing officially with the Steelers, Mauro had reached a new agreement with the team, leaving the Steelers community shocked and devastated when they learned of his passing. This made the loss all the more difficult to bear.

Over the course of his 80 NFL games, Mauro recorded 130 tackles and 5 sacks, consistently providing steady and dependable performances.

The 2016 season stood as the highlight of his career, when he started 13 games for the Cardinals and posted a career-high 32 tackles.

Steelers fans continue to mourn the unfulfilled dream of watching Mauro help the black and gold secure a Super Bowl victory.

Acrisure Stadium is filled with sorrow as fans and the organization reflect on emotional memories of the former Steelers player.

Many former teammates and coaches have extended their heartfelt condolences to Mauro’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

Mauro was known as a dedicated player who always gave his best, even though he wasn’t one of the NFL’s biggest stars.

A Stanford graduate, Mauro brought professionalism and relentless determination throughout his eight seasons in the NFL.

Despite battling numerous injuries and setbacks, Mauro stayed committed to his passion for football until the very end.

The entire NFL community has united in offering warm tributes to the talented former defensive end.

In Pittsburgh, fans still hold a special place in their hearts for Mauro, despite his relatively brief time with the Steelers.

Though his Super Bowl dream with the Steelers went unfulfilled, it will continue to inspire the next generation of players.

Mauro’s sudden passing serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment on the field.

Josh Mauro leaves behind a lasting legacy as a quiet warrior with an unbreakable spirit in the hearts of football fans everywhere.

He will forever be remembered by Steelers faithful, Cardinals supporters, and the entire NFL with the utmost respect and deepest gratitude.

Steelers Terminate Contract with Promising UDFA Rookie Star Less Than One Week After Signing Him for Arriving 30 Minutes Late on First Day of Minicamp: “This Is Not College”
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – May 10, 2026 Just days after signing an undrafted free agent (UDFA) tight end, the Pittsburgh Steelers have officially terminated the contract of the promising rookie after he arrived 30 minutes late to the first practice of Rookie Minicamp. According to internal sources confirmed by Steelers Depot and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the tight end – regarded as one of the most promising “hidden gems” in the 2026 UDFA class – failed to report on time when the team began activities at 8:00 a.m. this morning (May 8) at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex practice fields. This was the first and final disciplinary violation for the 23-year-old rookie. Immediately following the incident, head coach Mike McCarthy held a brief press conference and issued a stern statement: “This is not college. This is the NFL, where no one evaluates you based on your skills or accolades. The Steelers demand iron discipline from every player, starting from day one. There are no exceptions. If you cannot meet the standard from day one here, the opportunity will not come to you a second time in the NFL.” McCarthy, hired to uphold the legendary Steelers culture of accountability, emphasized that the team will not tolerate any behavior that undermines overall professionalism, no matter how talented the player may be. “We sign players for their talent, but talent must come with responsibility. If not, we will find someone else,” he added. The player in question is Lake McRee, a 6-foot-4 (1.93m), 245-pound (111kg) tight end from USC, who made a strong impression during pre-draft workouts with his versatility and receiving skills. In his final college season, he recorded 30 receptions for 450 yards and 4 touchdowns, proving to be a reliable target in the Trojans' high-powered offense. The Steelers gave him a significant guaranteed salary for a UDFA — a figure reflecting their high hopes — and many analysts predicted he could become a major “steal” in this year’s rookie class for the TE room. However, today’s events have ended McRee’s hopes with the Steelers after less than a week. Per NFL rules, his UDFA contract is a standard three-year minimum-value deal, and the team has the right to release him at any time during this period without significant compensation. This is not the first time the Steelers have enforced a “zero tolerance” policy with rookies to maintain the "Steelers Way." Under the current leadership, maintaining a focused and punctual locker room culture is paramount. Even in the new era under Mike McCarthy and General Manager Omar Khan, the culture of ironclad discipline and absolute professionalism remains firmly in place on the South Side. The Steelers have not yet announced their plan to replace the tight end spot in the rookie group. Rookie Minicamp continues from May 8-10, featuring draft picks and remaining UDFAs, including standout tight end Chamon Metayer (Arizona State) and defensive lineman Kevin Jobity Jr. (Syracuse). Update: Lake McRee’s representatives have not issued an official comment. McRee can still sign with other teams as a free agent UDFA, but his stock has been significantly damaged by being just 30 minutes late. A costly lesson for all rookies: In Pittsburgh, no matter how much of a “star” prospect you are, “This is not college” remains the supreme rule.
