Green Bay, Wisconsin – The Green Bay Packers believed they were drafting one of the smartest defensive players in the entire 2026 NFL Draft when they selected Brandon Cisse with the 45th overall pick in the second round.
What the organization reportedly did not expect was how quickly the rookie would begin taking command of the defense inside the Don Hutson Center.
According to multiple observers at rookie minicamp, Cisse has already started directing defensive alignments, communicating pre-snap adjustments, and organizing teammates during drills like a veteran defensive captain.

That early leadership reportedly left a major impression on head coach Matt LaFleur, who internally compared the rookie cornerback to legendary former Packers star Charles Woodson.
For Packers fans, that comparison carries enormous significance.
Woodson, famously known as one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history, remains a cornerstone of the Packers’ legacy and was a key leader of the defense that helped Green Bay win Super Bowl XLV.
The former Packers star is a Pro Football Hall of Famer, a nine-time Pro Bowler, and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
According to reports from rookie minicamp, however, the comparison is not centered around statistics or athleticism.
It is about command.
At South Carolina, Cisse reportedly operated as the “quarterback” of the defense, constantly reading offensive formations before the snap and repositioning teammates into proper assignments.

That same trait is already becoming visible inside Green Bay’s defensive meetings and practice sessions.
Observers reportedly noted that Cisse does not behave like a typical rookie defensive back.
Most first-year cornerbacks spend early offseason practices quietly absorbing information while veterans control communication responsibilities across the defense.
Instead, Cisse reportedly seems uncomfortable unless he is actively directing traffic and making adjustments for teammates around him.
The Packers were initially drawn to the rookie because of his elite athletic profile, instincts, physicality, and football intelligence.
But internally, several figures reportedly believe his greatest strength may actually be leadership.
College coaches previously compared Cisse’s defensive processing ability to Charles Woodson because of how naturally he recognized offensive tendencies before the snap.
What makes the situation even more remarkable is how rare this behavior is for an NFL rookie.
Young defensive backs almost never attempt to immediately take leadership control of an NFL defense because of the overwhelming amount of information they are still trying to process themselves.
Cisse, however, reportedly embraces that responsibility naturally.
“He doesn’t just want to play corner. He wants to control the defense,” one observer reportedly shared following minicamp practices.
For Matt LaFleur and the Packers, that mentality may be exactly why the organization now believes it found far more than just another talented cornerback in the second round.
If the early comparisons to Charles Woodson continue growing louder, Green Bay may have already found the next great defensive voice of the franchise.
